IMECE Director Þenay Dur explains why the Istanbul Convention is crucial in combatting violence against women and girls (VAWG). She says the convention forces governments to provide support and protection services for women exposed to domestic violence, prosecute and rehabilitate perpetrators, and cooperate with other countries to combat VAWG.
She says Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention is a reactionary move, and it would have a domino effect on the global combat against VAWG:
“You create healthy relationships, education and environment, so the younger generations grow with this knowledge. This is a universal thing. It is not in conflict with any countries’ family values, or it definitely does not promote homosexuality. What Turkey declared by withdrawing from the convention is that we don’t want to protect women.”
